Thank you very much. I am honoured to be here today to share this platform with President Jagdeo and our Prime Minister and to also be among so many distinguished members of the audience who have come from so many professional backgrounds. I would like to say a special welcome to Trinidad and Tobago. Supporting what the Prime Minister said earlier on we have been looking forward to this Round-Table with the hopes of creating a new sort of thinking that will shape our responses to the current situation that we are all facing. Within recent times, we have seen a change in the vocabulary, which described the economic space of our global economy. |

POWER OF ONE THE HUMAN ELEMENT - SUZANNE MILLS Sunday, July 10 2011
2011-07-10

Winston Dookeran is not the sort of man to seek gratitude, but the country owes him one. How often have we seen our leaders do what’s right for party, government and nation? The moment had arrived for the Congress of the People to step into a fresh phase of development and Mr Dookeran acknowledged its advent without panic or ambiguity. Had he crazy glued himself to the COP, had he practised the politics of “who we go put”, he would have converted the COP into the PNM or the UNC. He let power slip out of his hands like tap water and opened the course for the COP election to be held minus controversy, intrigue or backroom dealing, demonstrating that the party can be a living organism, if its leader allows it the space to breathe. With a new man now in charge, the COP is poised to grow. |

THE SEARCH FOR A NEW FRONTIER ECONOMY - Remarks |

2011-02-09 REMARKS BY: THE HONOURABLE WINSTON DOOKERAN - MINISTER OF FINANCE ON "THE SEARCH FOR A NEW FRONTIER ECONOMY" AT THE ENERGY CHAMBER CONFERENCE, HYATT REGENCY TRINIDAD Your Conference theme and timing is most appropriate for Trinidad and Tobago today. This is so as we come to grips with the global imbalances facing the world economy and as we embark upon new frontier industrialisation policies for Trinidad and Tobago. I believe it is the Chief Executive Officer of the Brazilian Company, Petrobras, Jose Gabrielli De Ascevedo who explained his country's challenge "to direct international investment in association with local Brazilian companies to increase local content and in so doing to embrace large swaths of Brazilian industry". This initiative has established Brazil as, perhaps the first sustainable bio fuels economy. Indeed, it is an expression of the new frontier industrial policies now required in today's global economy where new global imbalances are emerging. |
